• Houston’s Vietnamese Language Radio Binds Community

Houston now has the largest community of Vietnamese in the United States outside the state of California, and the Vietnamese population in other Texas cities is also growing. One key to keeping the people in these communities informed and in touch with the community at large is the radio station called Radio Saigon-Houston. As VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Houston, the broadcasts provide a link to Vietnam as well. Originally published at - http://www.voanews.com/a/3543748.html

  • Radio One Flipping Houston's Praise 92.1 to "News 92" on Nov. 17th @ 5AM

On Twitter: @AkiemBailum This isn't Radio One...is it? Radio One specializes in Urban targeted formats. In fact, Radio One is Arbitron rated #2 and #3 in Houston with KBXX Mainstream Urban 97.9 The Box and KMJQ Majic 102.1. Only Clear Channel's KODA-FM AC "Sunny 99.1" has higher numbers and cume. They also have an Urban Gospel station on 92.1 called "Praise". It is the flagship of the Yolanda Adams Morning Show that is syndied on the other "Praise" outlets in Atlanta and Philadelphia among others. Radio One must not be giving much Praise to the Christian station and believes 92.1 has spent enough time in church. This is why starting November 17th, Praise 92.1 becomes All-News outlet "News 92". This one has a chance to be a huge success or a huge flop. The station will be Houston...

The station will be Houston's affiliate for ABC News Radio and will also be buoyed by Associated Press Media Sources as well. Houston is the largest market without an All-News station and such a station is considerably pricy to run. But, no one expected Radio One of all people to run such a station. If anything, they may run an All-News station that's targeted to H-Town's black community. Houston is around 15-20% black in addition to being 20-30% Latina/Latino. This is according to Mike McGuff's Houston media blog. That same blog is also reporting that likely competitor, Clear Channel's 740 KTRH could be planning on countering Radio One. 740 KTRH has been in a state of identity transition for the past few years. They're still branded as NewsRadio, but they're more or less a conservative news talk station. In fact, their original conservatalk sister, 950 KPRC has since rebranded as 950 "Radio Mojo" to be somewhat of a hybrid political/lifestyle station for men. That strategy has failed big time. In fact, this is why it's so easy for Clear Channel to make this right. Simply put Rush, Hannity, and friends back where they belong on 950 KPRC and make 740 into an All-News station. It's not too often where a market has two competing all News outlets like in Chicago (and possibly soon in Washington as well), but that could soon be happening in Houston. Radio One has always pushed the envelope with H-Town. Instead of their normal Urban News/Talk/News One fare, 92.1 has been an enigma along the lines of Radio Now 100.9 in Indianapolis. At one time, R1 even tried a Regional Mexican format called "La Mera Mera" on 92.1. I was blown away when I found out that this was the sister to Majic 102 and the Box. HUH?!?! Come Again? Praise's format will be relocated to an online stream as well as the HD2 of Majic 102.1. We'll see and hear soon enough if Radio One's heads aren't in ....space. lol :-) Your Opinion...?

The first clip is of a proclamation presented to Anita Martini in her Atascocita home by city councilman Jim Greenwood, after she had undergone surgery for a brain tumor. The second is the bulk of a piece by reporter Chris Kelley contrasting styles of the morning teams of KLOL's legendary Stevens & Pruett and KFMK's long-running Chuck Shramek & Lee Jolly.
